Dr Quek Swee Chong: A Singapore Gynaecologist on the Frontline of Cervical Cancer Prevention in the Himalayas

Since 2009, Dr Quek Swee Chong, past-president of SCCPS, has spearheaded the Himalayan Women’s Health Project (HWHP), bringing cervical-cancer screening, treatment, and women’s-health education to remote the Himalayan regions of Ladakh, India. Through regular outreach camps, his team has screened and treated thousands of women on-site through cost-effective methods and built local capacity to sustain care. 

His work has been spotlighted by Channel NewsAsia in a 2025 episode of On The Red Dot: Hidden Heroes showing how access to cervical-cancer prevention is delivered to women who might otherwise never receive care. This episode was shot on-site during the most recent three-day screening and treatment camp in August 2025 at Nubra Valley where 525 women were screened and 143 women received treated.

Through decades of personal commitment, Dr Quek has prevented cervical cancer from devastating the lives of several women in underserved Himalayan communities by bridging a critical gap in cervical cancer care through both immediate intervention and laying the groundwork for sustainable preventive care.
